Richard Sharpe is once again at war. But this time his enemy is a single man - the ruthless, sadistic Colonel Leroux. Sharpe's mission is to safeguard El Mirador, the spy whose network of agents is vital to the British victory, the spy whose identity is already likely to be compromised So Sharpe must enter a new world of political and military intrigue. And in the unfamiliar surroundings of Spanish aristocratic society, his only guide is the beautiful Marquesa - a woman with her own secrets to conceal. ___________________________________________
The film version of Sword is different in various aspects to the novel. (I'll leave these to the Sharpe experts to discuss.) One of the differences being the absence of the Marquesa, who is substituted by a trainee Nun, who Sharpe christens "Lass". (A Yorkshire expression!!!) "Lass" has been struck mute by the shock of seeing her travelling companions, a Priest and two Nuns, tortured and murdered by Leroux, in his efforts to find the true identity of El Mirador. Sharpe takes her under his wing, and is rewarded by "Lass" saving his life after he is wounded during the siege on the fort at Vilafranca |
