Sean Bean as Thomasoni
Caravaggio
| Derek
Jarman's portrait of the seventeenth century Italian
artist Michelangelo Caravaggio took seven years of
struggle to make into production. The film is simply and
atmospherically photographed to mirror the the dark empty
rooms of Caravaggio's paintings. There were never many
participants in these paintings and the small cast
reflect this. Caravaggio is attracted to Sean's character of Ranuccio, and persuades him to model for him. However the relationship becomes deeper and leads to more sinister events. Caravaggio is played by Nigel Terry |
